Life on the water.

Nowhere in the UK is life more centred around the ocean than Cornwall. As a county that has deep roots in the fishing industry, the ocean has always been an intrinsic part of life, but now tourism and recreation have taken over as the main reasons people leap into the briny. With so many options for how to get on, in and under the waves to choose from, we have compiled a list of our favourite water-based activities available in our area.

Surfing

Once a niche lifestyle, now a mainstream sport, surfing has gone through a lot of changes in the last 50 years. This little strip of North Cornwall has played a huge part in the development of the sport not just in the UK, but much further afield and this is evident in our towns and on our beaches, where you are never very far from a surf shop. We are blessed with beaches that pick up a range of swell directions, so whether you are a complete beginner or a seasoned pro, we have a break for you.

Stand up paddleboarding.

Experiencing popularity like no other, Supping is everywhere. While it’s great fun to hop on at the beach and have a paddle, Supping is also a great way to explore some of our coast’s hidden coves and inlets. Join a guided excursion and head out with experienced instructors who will be on hand with invaluable tips and tricks for navigating the rips and tidal swell that are a feature of this coast.

Coasteering

An energetic mix of rock pooling and climbing, this activity is perfect for our rugged coastline. Travelling along the line of the tide, you jump, swim and climb your way along, exploring caves and gullies as you go. Always go with a guide, as fast-moving tides mean that getting cut off is a real possibility, plus they will always know the best jump spots!

Kayaking- sea and estuary

Kayaking is a fabulous introduction to the North Cornwall coastline, as you can appreciate the true beauty of the cliffs and bays from the water. An amazing way to connect with wildlife, don’t be surprised if you see lots of curious seals and birds who would usually be hidden away from noisier modes of transport.

Kite surfing

Is being pulled along by a huge kite, propelled by the power of the wind the activity for you? Look no further than Watergate Bay, where the prevailing south-westerly winds and huge sandy beach create a perfect spot for this insane activity. The UK kitesurfing scene has produced some world champs, so if you fancy a go, you are in good company.

Wild swimming

You don’t have to go the full Wim Hof to feel the benefits of a cold-water dip, and our gorgeous stretch of coastline has many hidden coves and bays where you can enjoy a peaceful swim away from the crowds. Cornwall has some incredible in-land spots for a swim too, so if you fancy a dip in a quarry, or under a waterfall, there are plenty of locations for you to explore.

Sailing

Cornwall has a long history of sailing, and being surrounded by water, it’s not hard to see why! Whether it’s a leisurely cruise up the Camel estuary, or a more challenging trip on the high seas, Cornwall has something for every level of sailor. The estuary is alive with boats in the summer months, and with several sailing schools offering both hire and courses, there really is no excuse not to give it a try.

Diving and Free diving

These shores have a treasure trove waiting for any divers who brave the waves. From incredible wildlife (2ft starfish anyone??) to a host of wrecks, the seabed is a playground for those who like to dive. With so many sites, it really can be a diver’s paradise, and whether you wear tanks or not, there is so much to explore.

Fishing

Cornwall’s seas are a haven for a multitude of species, and whether you fish from the shore or a boat, there is always a spot to hit. The craggy coastline provides shelter for fish and fisherman alike, and there are plenty of options for guided trips either on land or sea, where you can take advantage of the local’s knowledge of the area and get yourself the catch of the day.

Whether you are a seasoned water-baby or dipping a toe for the first time, never enter the water alone, and always let someone know where you are going. Check the tides, and make sure you have plenty of warm clothes for when you get back on land. If in doubt, go with a group or enrol on a course; there are so many ways to enjoy our amazing oceans, so see you out there!!!
